It's a good week for comedy. The San Francisco Sketchfest is in full swing and Kasper Hauser are taking the stage tonight and Friday and doing a sketch-writing workshop on Saturday. (And, cooler still, I got the troupe to start a Vox page. Look for more over there soon.) But, friends, that's not why I'm writing. No, the reason I'm here is to tell you to watch the Comedy Central debut of The Naked Trucker and T-Bones Show later tonight.
I originally saw their act at Sketchfest a few years ago and was blown away. It's a lot of great things: surprising, endearing, musical, and, of course, like all good comedy, horribly horribly offensive. No, I kid. Actually, it's really sweet stuff. Fans of Dave Koechner (SNL, Anchorman) and Dave "Gruber" Allen (Mr. Rosso of Freaks and Geeks!) have good reason to tune in, alert the TiVo, and just generally rejoice. Tonight at 10:30 (or thereabouts) on Comedy Central.
I'd managed to miss the arrival of Steve Coogan's "Saxondale" when it originally aired on the BBC. Happily, having gotten caught up in Jenny's new addiction to the British version of "What Not to Wear," I saw a few promos for the series and (boopboopboop) told the TiVo to get it for me. It just started airing a couple weeks ago on BBC America and it's classic Coogan -- uncomfortable, yet spot-on skewering of a middle-aged man who lacks self-awareness. In this case, Coogan inhabits Tommy Saxondale, ex-roadie, who has retired from life on tour with Deep Purple, ELP, the Floyd, et. al., and is now living a more "normal" life -- wife, house, group therapy, job in pest control. Unlike Coogan's other great character, Alan Partridge, Tommy Saxondale actually seems to be trying to be good, which makes him genuinely endearing. It takes an episode or two to tune in to the accents, but your patience will be rewarded. Trust me.
Update: I neglected to mention that "I'm Alan Partridge" is finally out on domestic DVD in the US. Buy it. Now. I'm serious.
The best commerical I've seen in recent years (and I've seen it thousands of times) is the 3-second fast-forwarded commercial that whizzes by when I hit >>> on my TiVo remote. And it makes me want to buy lots and lots of TiVos. That said, I do miss those California Raisins. Sigh....
